The 800+ acre Great Meadow watershed was declared an Area of Critical Environmental Concern in 2002 by the State of Massachusetts, which hosts a cold water fishery with native brook trout, and numerous mammal species and waterfowl. The Nicholson Family Preserve is a part of this ACEC.
