EcologyThe land lies only a few feet above the Blackstone River and is part of the floodplain. It is entirely sandy and flat. The entire parcel was submerged in the flood of October 2005. The area was used to graze beef cattle up until the 1950s, so the vegetation is about 40 years old. The edge along the Blackstone Canal has a row of white pines that lay just outside of the area used to graze cattle, so they are older than the trees coming up in the former field. Poison ivy is extensive. |
